Not sure what an email newsletter can do for you? Here's why your email newsletter is the single most important part of your marketing plan:
Most people I run into have the same complaint - "I have no follow up system to keep me in front of my clients so I have to keep finding new ones." It's a very common problem.
And most business owners I meet suffer from "Bright Shiny Object Syndrome". We jump from great idea to great idea, flitting about all day long until we collapse at the end of the day and wonder what (if anything) we accomplished.
Your email newsletter is the most important part of your marketing plan is because it solves multiple problems all at once.
First it
automates your marketing funnel. Picture the funnel like the letter "V". At the top you have a wide opening. At the bottom is a small point. The top represents the lowest cost and lowest time investment items you offer in your business. At the bottom is the highest cost and time investment stuff.
Most of us know it's kind of silly to try to start a brand new client out with something high end because the level of trust may not be there or they may not be a good match for your services, So you start them out with something lower cost or free, like a newsletter.
Here are
more things a newsletter can do for you:
It takes the average consumer 10 - 16 touches before they are willing to make a buying decision. A newsletter that's sent out regularly systematizes the process. For example, I had someone I met at a networking event and hadn't seen for more than a year call me up. He said it was because he'd been receiving my newsletter the whole time and was now ready to buy. If my newsletter had not been in front of that person, he would have gone into his Rolodex looking for someone who does what I do. Because I was in front of him every month, he remembered me and chose me first.
People typically make buying decisions based upon whether someone is A) a friend or B) an authority. When you send out a newsletter that includes personal information, they think of you as a friend. When it also includes information of value, you are an authority. A newsletter can set you up to be BOTH,
making your clients much more likely to buy from you.
A newsletter can
systematize downline or affiliate/ambassador communications. Often times the people who refer you regularly or are downline (for MLM's) are prior customers and have a different kind of relationship with you,. A newsletter just for them (such as an ambassador focus), can communicate with them at a different level, setting you up for success. You can communicate training ideas or a special focus that will hep them promote you and makes them feel special as well.
You can sell stuff in your newsletter. This is a bit trickier, because you need a system or a website to take the money but you really can make money with an ebook or a lower priced product by offering it in your newsletter. I would NOT recommend offering a high end thing in your newsletter. You can and should build excitement by talking about something big, however it's best to send them to a well crafted sales page or have a conversation with them if you want a response to a higher ticket item.
The right email newsletter program can give you all kinds of nifty reports like who opened our email, what they clicked on and who forwarded it. That's why I love Constant Contact so much because it has all of that functionality, allowing you to see exactly how effective your newsletter is for you.
If you want to do it yourself here's what you need to know:
Your newsletter should contain 4 main parts:
- Something personal about you (10%). This is a story about a trip you went, something your kids are doing etc
- Educational Content (70%). This is the main body and is where you give your clients information they need about your profession or something related that is of value to your client.
- Resources or people you recommend (10%). Use strategic allies, vendors who have done a great job, products for which you are an affiliate etc.
- Something you are promoting (10%). Here's where you can sell your "stuff" if you have stuff to sell or promote an event you are doing or participating in.
- Make absolutely certain your list is permission based! You must be able to prove - in writing - that the people who are going to receive your newsletter have given you permission to send it to them.
Once you start doing a newsletter – you must be consistent. And that is the hardest part. Most people get all excited, send out a few issues and when they don’t get results right away give up. Remember it takes 10 – 16 touches before someone is going to make a buying decision with you. That can be almost a year of monthly newsletters!
Read this if you already do a newsletter:
Some people use a system like Outlook to send out their newsletter. Here’s why that’s a problem. You can only send out communications in tiny batches of 20 or fewer recipients which is incredibly time consuming. Emails that are delivered to “undisclosed recipients” or “name of sender” are often blocked by service providers, so you never know if they were received, much less if they were read. Additionally, by failing to provide recipients with a simple way to unsubscribe, you are violating the CAN SPAM act, which can get you into more trouble than you really want.
